Liquid Air! How the heck could liquid nitrogen replace gasoline? Well believe it or not this is a relatively old idea that was first introduced in 1899. There was a care actually called Liquid Air produced in a joint venture and designed by Hans Knudsen. It was claimed to have went 40 miles at 12mph on 18 US gallons of liquid air. The University of Texas with their liquid nitrogen powered car the CoolLN2Car” reintroduced this same concept, in the 1980’s. Much like the rest of America, I’m fed up with the extremely high gas prices and the dependence on foreign countries for our energy needs. It appears that there is a group located in Decatur, IN that are trying to solve this problem for us.
I know you wouldn’t think of Decatur, IN as being a hot bed of scientific research on alternative fuels but as it turns out it is. William H. Michaels founded a not for profit organization called DARLAP NFP to research and develop a liquid air powered turbine that could be used in fork lifts, golf carts, riding mowers and other smaller gas powered vehicles. I had received an email about this organization and its research on the use of liquid nitrogen and found it very interesting. This might not be news to some of you as Bill Michaels and DARLAP have received some coverage from local news organizations. Frank Gray wrote an article published about DARLAR and its liquid air power concept in the June 22, 2008 edition of The Journal Gazette. I’m sure DARLAP would be receiving much more media attention about its research into liquid nitrogen and its potential to replace fossil fuels if it was located at MIT or in the lab of some big oil company.

While we are on the topic of alternative energy sources has anyone ever really taken a hard look at wind energy. In days not to far past many well pumps and other farm motors were powered by windmills. Today with the need to replace gasoline as an energy source for motors people are starting to turn to alternatives like wind and solar which any do it yourself minded person can utilize. a DIY homebuilt wind generator is something you might consider to create electricity to power your garage or tool shed and possibly reduce some of your electricial energy needs throughout the house. Get creative in your thinking and you can come up with some great alternative fuel ideas to implement like liquid nitrogen, wind energy and solar power.
