With the high number of hospitals, doctor’s offices, nursing homes and other medical related businesses a student with a nursing degree or certificate in nursing will be very employable. There are many fine nursing schools in Indiana and many right here in the north east part of Indiana.
IPFW offers many different options in their nursing school and programs.
You can get either an associates degree in nursing, bachelors nursing degree in addition to certificates for nursing administration and advanced degrees like a master is nursing.
One option for younger people in need of immediate income would be to take the shorter route of getting a LPN nursing license and then enter the workforce. You can always go back later and compete and LPN to RN program to improve upon you nursing skills and get a higher paying job. I would recommend if you have the time to go for the RN nursing program and complete it if possible as most hospitals only want registered nurses on staff.
IVY Tech in Fort Wayne Indiana also offers quite a few medical related and nursing school options to choose from. While they offer very similar nursing school degrees that IPFW has they tend to be just a bit cheaper in overall tuition. Here are some of the nursing programs and medical career options available at IVY tech.
Central Service Technician
Dental Assisting
Dental Hygiene
Health Information Technology
Medical Assisting
Medical Laboratory Technology
Paramedic Science
Physical Therapy Assisting
Practical Nursing
Radiation Therapy
Radiologic Technology
Registered Nursing (RN)
Respiratory Care
Surgical Technology
Therapeutic Massage
These are just two examples of the quality nursing schools in Indiana that are close to Decatur. Some of the other Indiana nursing schools would include ITT Technical College, St. Francis School of nursing. (Private university considerably more expensive but one of the top nursing schools in Indiana), Brown Mackie College in Fort Wayne, and Huntington University. These are just the nursing schools in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. Ball State has an excellent nursing program as well as Purdue, IU and hundreds of others throughout the state of Indiana. There are even many online nursing programs and schools available these days. I’ve heard the online nursing schools are very expensive compared to most normal universities. Online distance learning is also harder in my opinion
The biggest problem I’ve heard is that most nursing programs only accept a limited number of students each year which makes getting into the nursing schools a bit more difficult than some other degree fields. If anyone has a recommendation as to the best Indiana nursing school or other information let us all know in the comments.

You are forgetting to list Paramedic programs that are at Ivy Tech and Adams Memorial Hospital.
Thanks you I hadn’t through about Paramedic Programs but that is another segment of the medial field that will be high in demand
I am an RN and while there is a nursing shortage , there isn’t in this area. IPFW only offers bachelors degree in nursing now. I love my job. If one desires to be an RN go directly into the program and do not mess with LPN degree. Best advice I ever got. My education at IPFW was great. Everyone that I went to school with passed boards with the minimum questions. There is a nursing instructor shortage. Makes it very difficult to accept students into the program once they apply. To get into the program at IPFW, when I attended, you needed a 4.0!!!! Alot of students needed to retake classes cause a B wasn’t good enough. It is a respected profession, pays well, alot of responsibilities and stress, but worth it. Some people I work with went to St. Francis and they really liked it there, also.
My wife attended IPFW back in the early 90’s and she got the run around from her advisor and when it was time to apply to the nursing program she was told she had to retake some classes to get a better gpa. She did as “advised” and still wasn’t able to get in. She drove across the street to IVY Tech and was told exactly what she needed to do and got into there LPN program without a problem. I think IPFW has gotten to big any you just become a number and $ sign to them.
The information stated here is not exactly accurate. Some of the degrees listed offered at Ivy Tech are not available at the Fort Wayne campus. Futhermore, it is becoming nearly impossible to get into a Nursing program without a wait of a year or two. The top 3 Colleges or Universities, all have waiting lists. Many technical schools have popped up recently, but do not have accredidation into the North Central College and University accrediting agency. This means credits will not transfer to another college or university. Also, potential employers will not look at degrees from technical schools as being equal to colleges or universities. Yes, the demand for nurses will be there, once the babyboomers retire. Interestingly, nursing schools in the area are pumping out atleast 150 new grads every Spring. Will Fort Wayne be saturated with new grads?
These are just my observations in the last two years I have been taking my prerequisites. Now, I am considering switching majors.
