Cheap Outdoor Post Lights Making Me Mad

Ok I’ve about had it with these cheap outdoor post lights that walmart sells. Over the last few years I’ve replace the light on the top of the post that lines my driveway 3 times. Each time it seems that the plastic hinges on the post light break and the top goes flying off in some snow storm. I’ve never really been fond of the setup that I have as its a solar powered light that isnt’ controlled by a switch in the house like the wall mounted outdoor lights I have on either side of my garage door. I’ve finally decided to break down and buy a more expensive style of light fixture to put on that stupid post. This one I actually found at Menards who was having a clearance sale on outdoor lights over the Christmas shopping season. While this light is still solar powered it does have the option of overiding that function with the switch in the house. I guess I probably could have made the other one do the same thing I just never seemed to think about it until the light broke or I needed to turn it off. I usually have replaced it with a black post light fixture but this one which has a brass finish and is made of metal is much nicer and will make my house stand apart from the rest of the neighbors who all have the same ugly black plastic post light. While it does add a bit a uniformity to the street it is really a boring look.

My biggest problem now is dealing with getting the porch light post painted to match the brass finish on the lighting cap but that will have to wait until spring. If any in my addtion are reading this I hope you dont take offense at my mention of your ugly outdoor post lighting.

Excellent suggestions, spending a bit more money upfront on quality lighting fixtures will save you considerable amout of headaches and time replacing the cheap stuff over the years.

Those Post lights are a real eye sore in my opinion. I tore mine down and build a nice brick pedistal and put a lantern style outdoor light on it. Looks much nice and the brick lasts longer than that post light
