While many in the community have been working hard with the school board to find a solution to saving the current elementary school configuration in the North Adams School district it might all be in vein. I just read an article in the Daily Democrat where the superintendent discussed proposed changes by Indiana lawmakers that plan to shift how they fund the schools utility bills and liability insurance. According to the superintendent the change the Indiana State lawmakers have in mind would result in drastic measures that could result in school closures in the district. All school board members were encouraged to contact their state representative and senators to fight against such a proposal.
So while there has been much discussion and attention paid to the previously proposed school reconfigurations it might all have been for nothing if the school district is forced to close a school due to an accounting change at the State level.
It is amazing the amount of homes for rent in Fort Wanye, Decatur, and the Surrounding areas. I bet I pass at least 20 for rent signs sitting in the yards on my way to work every day. The funny thing is I sure don’t remember all of them being available 8 yrs ago when I was looking desperately for a house to rent in the Decatur area. I acutally ended up buying my house not knowing if I was going to stay here for long just because there was a lack of them. Read More »

Is Green remodeling the right choice? My wife and I have been contemplating doing some home remodeling this summer both inside the house and out. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately searching the Internet and learning about green home remodeling and how to remodel your house using environmentally friendly products. I’m not usually one to be overly concerned on maintaining a green lifestyle or reducing my carbon footprint but Read More »

The school board voted at lasts nights meeting to delay the North Adams school reconfiguration and won’t readdress the issue until April of 2010. The Decatur Daily Democrat reported:
Acting upon the recommendation of Superintendent of Schools Wylie Sirk, who said in a prepared statement that an ad hoc citizen committee had threatened legal action against the school district for its reconfiguration decision due to of alleged procedural irregularities, the board voted 5-0 to postpone for at least a year any further discussions surrounding the realignment of classrooms in the school district
This hopefully will open the doors for better communication between the board and citizens of Decatur for future changes. In addition to halting the school reconfiguration the board also announced additional teacher cuts that are taking place due to lower enrollment numbers in the local schools.
